A carburetor is essentially an open tube through which air flows into the engine's intake manifold.
The tube is shaped like a venturi: it narrows in cross-section and then widens again, causing the air flow to increase in speed at the narrowest point.
Below the venturi is a throttle valve, a throttle plate, a rotating disc that can be turned with the end facing the airflow to barely restrict the flow of air, or turned so that it blocks (almost) completely the flow of air.
This valve controls the flow of air through the carburetor throat and therefore the amount of air-fuel mixture that the system delivers, thereby regulating engine power and speed. The throttle valve is usually connected via a cable or a mechanical linkage of rods and joints.
Fuel is introduced into the airstream through small holes at the narrowest part of the venturi and other places where pressure is reduced when not operating at full throttle.
